- Poll about accessible travel - please participate - European Institure for Design and Disability Austria (2007-03-25 16:26:54)
Questionnaire about difficulties and problems experienced while travelling by train, underground and tram in Austria
With this survey (open until 15.4.2007), we want to find out about passengers’ difficulties while travelling by train, underground and tram. What experiences have you had personally while using the public rail network in Austria?
We kindly ask you to take a few moments to answer the 15 questions at
http://www.fgm.at/enter_fragebogen.phtml
If you need the questionnaire in Word format so that you can forward it to non-Internet users or because you are unable to or prefer not to complete it online, please let us know and we will send you the questionnaire via e-mail.
It goes without saying that your participation will be treated anonymously.
Based on the results of this survey we will work together with the Austrian rail network operators, rolling stock manufacturers and people with restricted mobility to create a concrete package of measures to facilitate more accessible travelling. Not only people with physical or sensory impairments are restricted in mobility, but also passengers with heavy luggage, prams and so on.
This study is carried out by order of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit).
Please pass on this information to other interested parties, so that as many people as possible have the opportunity to complete the questionnaire.
By completing the questionnaire you are supporting the goal of “ accessible travel for all.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

- NEW: BIZEPS Restaurant guide for Vienna (2007-03-28 12:09:26)
- The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol was adopted on 13 December 2006 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and was opened for signature on 30 March 2007. There were 82 signatories to the Convention, 44 signatories to the Optional Protocol, and 1 ratification of the Convention. This is the highest number of signatories in history to a UN Convention on its opening day. It is the first comprehensive human rights treaty of the 21st century and is the first human rights convention to be open for signature by regional integration organizations. It marks a “paradigm shift in attitudes and approaches to persons with disabilities.
The Convention is intended as a human rights instrument with an explicit, social development dimension. It adopts a broad categorization of persons with disabilities and reaffirms that all persons with all types of disabilities must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. It clarifies and qualifies how all categories of rights apply to persons with disabilities and identifies areas where adaptations have to be made for persons with disabilities to effectively exercise their rights and areas where their rights have been violated, and where protection of rights must be reinforced.

Information for visually impaired users of the Deutsche Bahn:
A survey on the service performances of the Deutsche Bahn AG for visually impaired and blind people.
Blind people and visually impaired people are travelling more often by themselves using mainly the Deutsche Bahn for local and long-distance traffic. Different support systems are being used and asked for by blind and visually impaired people. In order to meet demands and needs, the Deutsche Bahn has created many years ago the Mobilitätsservicezentrale (mobility service centre).
It is possible to participate in the survey in different ways: this survey has to collect the necessary data by means of questionnaires.
You can send your information online on the internet site http://umfrage.mobilitaetsportal.info.

- Germany: First sailing ship for wheelchair users (2007-05-21 22:05:05)
The first German sailing ship for people with special needs starts in May 2007
On the 5th of May 2007 the baptism of the first sailing ship for people with special needs in Germany took place. The maiden voyage was one day later. Now disabled and able bodied people can sail together on a vessel, having an adventurous time on water. It does not matter if it is steering, cooking or turning up the sails, these duties can be done by everyone. Two experienced skippers are helping with orientation on board and they are instructing the crew.
The vessel can be used by 12 persons, 5 of them can be wheel chair users. On board they have their own wheelchair, because they have special safety systems. The crewmembers in a wheelchair can crane themselves on the vessel.
With two different independently working lifts they can get to every important place. Berths, kitchen, and showers are disabled user friendly.
If there is a group interested in a trip, the planning can start now. The period from May to October is available. The trip can take some days, one week or more depending on each group. A dinner plan has to be prepared and the food must be bought, because this is a self-catering ship. During the main season you can rent a small bus suited for disabled persons. Shops are open from Monday to Sunday.
The journey is starting and ending in Ueckermünde, the harbour of the “Wappen von Ueckermünde. The trip is ruled by the wishes of the group, the weather situation and the evaluation of the skipper. Destinations can be harbors in the Peenestrom, Greifswalder Bodden and the Baltic Sea.
“Wappen von Ueckermünde
The costs per person per day are €50. Harbor dues, diesel and food costs must be added (all together should be approximately €62). The institution organising these journeys is the “Zentrum für Erlebnispädagogik und Umweltbildung in Ueckermünde, run by bsj Marburg.

We are looking for participants for a focus group on the subject „ Accessible Tourism“
After the first discussion in Ruppinger Land, a round table discussion will be happening on June 15th 07 on the North Sea Island Langeoog on the subject accessible tourism. Participants will be tourists and travellers being restricted in mobility or sometimes experiencing problems with circumstances due to various reasons.
This event is part of a study about the status quo of Accessible Tourism in Germany on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and carried out by the Institute of Geography of the University of MĂĽnster.
The next round table discussion will take place on June 19th 07 in Erfurt. Further events are planned in the Saxon part of Switzerland, the Fränkischen Seenland and in Eifel.
Goal of the discussions and the study is to analyse chances and constraints of the accessible tourism for All and develop further approaches for a wider improvement of the quality of accessible products.
Therefore detailed research will be carried out in 6 selected regions. In each of these regions a focus group will be established. During the discussion, which will take around 2 hours, guests from the respective region can report about their experiences.
For this purpose we are still looking for participants for the groups in Langeoog and Erfurt.

- Austria misses trend towards accessibility in tourism (2007-06-15 16:13:33)
According to an article in „monat -Sozialpolitische Rundschau der Dachorganisation der Behindertenverbände Österreichs" (issue June 2007) the proposition for harmonisation of the building regulations (instructions) plans that only up from 50 (!) guest beds one guestroom has to be equipped accessible – and then respectively from 100 (!)guest beds another one.. by doing that Austria misses an important development towards more comfort and accessibility but also neglects a tourist segment that is becoming more and more important.
